IDU Executive: Marrakech (Morocco) 25 - 27 October, 2015

The IDU Executive Committee and the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs will meet in Marrakech, Morocco from 25 to 27 October, 2015, hosted by Morocco’s IDU member Istiqlal. All IDU member parties are invited to attend, along with the IDU officers.

Participants should plan to arrive no later than Sunday 25 October as the meetings will start in the morning of Monday 26 October. Sunday evening there will be an informal reception for all that have arrived. Participants can plan on departing from the afternoon of Tuesday 27 October.

IDU members and officers are kindly asked to mark the dates in their calendar already now. Further details concerning accommodation, transport and registration will be available via the IDU intranet in due course.

Guatemala – Investigation into Presidential corruption suspended

An international commission created by United Nations to combat impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), working together with sectors of the local justice system, has produced evidence of widespread corruption within the ranks of senior government officials in Guatemala. The corruption scandal comes at a critical time before Guatemala’s General Election due on September 6.

Denmark – Centre-left government ousted

Denmark – Centre-left government ousted

Denmark held its parliamentary elections on Thursday, 18 June. The election gave the so-called blue bloc 90 seats compared to the red bloc’s 85. This means the centre-right should be able to control the Danish Parliament (Folketinget) for the coming term.

Taiwan on its way to female president

IDU member Kuomintang (KMT) looks set to nominate a female candidate for president in 2016. Deputy Legistlative Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu passed the 30 percent threshold in the party’s three recent presidential primary polls. Her average approval rating was 46 percent.

Republican Party presidential candidates for 2016

As of Tuesday, 16 June, the field of presidential candidates for the Republican Party grew to twelve, with at least four more expected to announce in the near future. Polls at this rather early stage indicate three frontrunners to the candidacy, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Scott Walker, all qualified for inclusion in the first two debates (only the top 10 candidates are invited).
