1) IDU supports the demand for Freedom and Democracy in Venezuela and utterly condemns all acts of violence

Against the backdrop of the current protests against the Maduro regime, it is necessary to counteract the state’s repressions. The Venezuelan people, defending freedom, democracy and the rule of law, are in the dire need of international attention. The use of violence against protesters is to be utterly condemned and has to be stopped immediately. Read the statement of IDU’s regional organization Union of Latin American Parties (UPLA) here.

2) Save the Date for the IDU Freedom Forum in Miami: 4th and 5th of May 2017

The International Democrat Union (IDU) and the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation (JHF) have the honour to invite you to this year’s Freedom Forum in Miami, taking place on the 4th and 5th of May 2017.

The Freedom Forum wants to draw the attention at the fate of political prisoners and political persecution. Imprisoning political opponents is a common tool of authoritarian governments to oppress critical voices from opposition and civil society. The numbers of political detentions and prisoners are not always told, limiting thereby the understanding of deterioration of democracy in those countries.

In this spotlight we want to look at the current situation in Venezuela, where a nation is being deprived of its freedom and where the number of political imprisonments in the last four years has more than doubled. Under the presidency of Nicolás Maduro the accumulation of power in the executive branch and the erosion of human rights, guarantees have enabled the government to intimidate, censor, and prosecute its critics. Leading opposition politicians have been arbitrarily arrested, prosecuted, convicted, and barred from running for office.

IDU and the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation would like to welcome you to join us in Miami to promote the values of Freedom and Democracy and to help those under political persecution. It is on us to stand up against authoritarian oppression and to help those who face repression because of their believes in the universal values of human rights.

Please confirm your participation in Miami here.

Further information regarding accomodation and venue will be provided as soon as possible.

3) IDU's South Korean member-party renamed

On February 13th, the former Saenuri Party (New Frontier Party) was renamed as the Liberty Korea Party (LKP).

The term 'Liberty' includes the core values of conservatism and liberal democracy. The 'Liberty Korea' implies the hope and aspiration of Korean people for freedom of Korea, or reunification of the Korean Peninsula based on freedom and liberal democracy. As the main conservative party of the Republic of Korea, the Liberty Korea Party will make every effort for national reunification, regional security, and global peace.
Please find additional Information about LKP here.
