The IDU mourns the loss of Alois Mock and Helmut Kohl

The International Democrat Union (IDU) mourns the loss of Alois Mock and Helmut Kohl, two exceptional politicians, convincing personalities and passionate Europeans.

Dr. Alois Mock died on June 1st 2017 at the age of 83.
Dr. Helmut Kohl died on June 16th 2017 at the age of 87.
At the peak of the Cold War in 1983 sharing the same ideals of democracy and freedom Alois Mock and Helmut Kohl founded with likeminded political leader like Margaret Thatcher, George H. W. Bush and Jacques Chirac the International Democrat Union in London. To challenge the unequal and oppressing communist societies, they had realised that a global network of likeminded christian-democrat and conservative parties is a necessary platform to transport ideas of personal freedom and free markets all over the world. In London Alois Mock was elected the first chairman of the IDU.

Driven by their experience of the World War II and the Cold War, Alois Mock and Helmut Kohl worked their entire political life to realise a free, fair and democratic society. Both personalities took their historical chances to overcome communism in Europe and ending the Cold War. With the «Pan-European-Breakfast», when the border fence between Hungary and Austria was peaceful cut down, Alois Mock took the first step to bring down the iron curtain which divided Europe for centuries. Helmut Kohl at the same time realised the opportunity not only to unify a divided Germany but also to unite Europe without force. As a follow up on the European unification Alois Mock paved the way for the Austrian accession to the European Union.
Alois Mock as Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister of Austria and Helmut Kohl and Chancellor of Germany are the best examples of political leadership based of a firm believe in human dignity and human rights. Even today both are icons to old and young generations.

We honour today Alois Mock and Helmut Kohl as two true champions of Freedom and Democracy. Before the backdrop of the erosion of democracy in more and more countries all over the world the ideas of Alois Mock and Helmut Kohl will be the guidelines to stand up and fight every day for our freedom. The IDU will preserve their believe in a self-determined life in a free and fair society as our primary task.

On behalf of the whole IDU family we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Alois Mock`s and Helmut Kohl’s family, our member parties OEVP in Austria and CDU in Germany. We will honour and preserve their heritage. May they rest in peace.
