Sri Lanka – Statement from the IDU Executive
The International Democrat Union Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Executive Committee met in Munich (Germany) on 17 January and adopted the following statement on Sri Lanka:
The IDU Executive congratulates the United National Party (UNP) led by IDU Vice Chairman and current Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for the accomplishments of the National Unity Government formed in January 9, 2015.
In partnership with President Sirisena, significant progress has been made in re-establishing democracy and good governance, initiating national reconciliation, initiating economic reforms and committing to fight climate change.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and President Sirisena have led the way towards re-establishing traditionally strong bilateral relations with EU Member Governments and European Institutions through bilateral visits and Parliamentary exchanges.
The Government’s commitment to free trade, foreign direct investment and sustainable development to alleviate poverty in Sri Lanka has been the key focus of the Prime Minister and his policies.
These accomplishments and sustained reforms underscore the need for strong action from the EU to support good governance, reconciliation and sustainable development by renewing the GSP+ enhanced trade preference program for Sri Lankan exports to access the EU market.
