This is the 70th anniversary of the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This milestone is a significant achievement that demonstrates its member states’ enduring commitment to global peace and security.
When NATO was created in 1949, the world was a starkly different place. The ultimate victory of the democratic world in the Cold War was, in no small measure, due to the leadership, cooperation and sustained determination of NATO allies and their global partners in defence of freedom and democracy.
My own nation, Canada, was a founding member of NATO, and I know many of our IDU member-parties come from countries that are NATO members or partners. These relationships remain of vital importance to continued global efforts to maintain peace and security and to support the spread of freedom and prosperity.
The IDU exists to bring conservatives together in support of these core values of democracy and individual liberty. We congratulate NATO on its 70th anniversary; we thank all men and women in uniform for their dedicated service; and we look forward to NATO’s ongoing contribution to our world for many years to come.
Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper
IDU Chairman
22nd Prime Minister of Canada
