We are pleased to announce that the former President of Chile, Sebastian Piñera, and the former President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, have joined the IDU Honorary Advisory Board.
President Piñera has been a marquee figure in Chilean politics since the restoration of democracy, having twice been elected President in 2010 and 2018. During his two terms in office, he governed according to centre-right values, whilst being responsive to the social changes occurring throughout the nation. Together with Colombian President Iván Duque, he founded PROSUR, an international body for South American countries that respect the rule of law, individual freedoms, and human rights. From 2001 to 2004, he led our Chilean member-party, National Renewal, having previously served eight years as Senator for Eastern Santiago.
President Poroshenko’s decades-long political career saw him defend Ukraine’s national sovereignty, democracy, culture, and rule of law in the face of Russian aggression. Having played a vital role in the Revolution of Dignity, he served as the country’s President between 2014 and 2019, overseeing the military operations against the separatist insurgents in the Donbass and strengthening Ukrainian democracy. He had previously served as Minister of Trade and Economic Development in 2012 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to 2010. He currently leads the European Solidarity Party and serves as a deputy in the Verkhovna Rada.
The IDU is honoured to have such distinguished and experienced statesmen on our team as we work towards building an ever-stronger global alliance of the centre-right. Thank you, President Piñera! Thank you, President Poroshenko!
