We are pleased to announce that the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, The Rt Hon. Liz Truss MP, has joined the IDU Honorary Advisory Board.
Prime Minister Truss brings with her more than ten years of government experience, having served as Leader of the Conservative Party during her premiership (2022), Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (2021-2022), International Trade (2019-2021), Chief Secretary to the Treasury (2017-2019), Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor (2016-2017), as well as Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (2014-2016).
Under her leadership, the British Government introduced an Energy Price Guarantee, which helped limit household energy costs following the uncertainty caused by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. As Foreign Secretary, during the lead-up to that invasion in February 2022, she took a firm stance against the Russian Federation’s unprovoked aggression and became one of the leading voices driving the effort to impose a sanctions regime until Russia ceased all hostilities and fully withdrew from the illegally occupied territories in Ukraine. She also ensured the UK was the first country in Europe to send weapons to the Ukrainian armed forces.
As International Trade Secretary, after the UK left the European Union, she established the UK’s first independent tariff regime in more than 40 years and signed dozens of trade deals with important partners such as Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as submitting the UK’s application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership.
She remains the Member of Parliament for the South West Norfolk constituency, which she has represented since 2010. Her book reflecting on her time in office and setting out some of the challenges posed by the global left – titled Ten Years to Save The West – is set to be published in April 2024.
The IDU is looking forward to building together an ever-stronger global alliance of the centre-right. Welcome, Prime Minister Truss!
