The International Democracy Union (IDU) expresses its strong condemnation of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, which started in February 2014, as well as the unprovoked large-scale invasion of Ukraine of February 24, 2022, which remain a clear and flagrant violation of international law and the global rules-based order.
On the 10th anniversary of the Revolution of Dignity («Euromaidan») in Ukraine the IDU reiterates the wide and comprehensive support for Ukraine in its fight for freedom and democracy, independence and sovereignty, territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders, and its right to freely choose its international alliances. We commend the bravery of Ukrainian Armed Forces, volunteers, and civil society, who combined their efforts to defend their nation from Russian war of aggression.
The IDU is committed to promote further strengthening of the international political, financial, economic, humanitarian and military support of Ukraine for as long as it takes to win against Russia, to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders, to ensure full reconstruction of the war-torn Ukrainian economy.
The International Democracy Union:
Acknowledges that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine poses a direct threat to the rules-based international order, the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter, and the fundamental democratic values it upholds,
Strongly demands the immediate and complete withdrawal of Russian armed forces and military assets from the sovereign territory of Ukraine, within the internationally recognized borders, without any preconditions or further escalation on the ground,
Demands that the Russian Federation revokes all illegal decisions to attempt annexation of the sovereign Ukrainian territories, in particular Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, Zaporizzhya regions and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, which are the clear and blatant violation of the UN Charter and the international law,
Appeals to the G7, the European Union, NATO member states and other democratic states to continuously support Ukraine politically, financially, economically and militarily until victory against Russia is achieved,
Calls for strengthening the military assistance to Ukraine, recognizing the importance of delivering weapons and ammunition without limitations on quality, range and type to expedite the resolution of the conflict,
Calls for more coordinated international sanctions to be imposed on Russia to deprive Russia of its ability to finance the war of aggression against Ukraine, including restrictive measures against Russian nuclear energy stakeholders, LNG, oil and natural gas international trade, as well as against companies engaged in producing or supplying the weapons, military goods, drones, military satellites,
Calls on the G7, the European Union, the NATO member states and other nations to strengthen the sanctions compliance regime and introduce restrictive measures against companies responsible for circumvention of sanctions against Russia and aid to Russia to continue its war of aggression against Ukraine,
Calls on Ukraine and the European Union to take all the possible efforts to ensure launching pre-accession negotiations as soon as possible,
Calls on the NATO Member States to take the opportunity of the Washington Summit of NATO in 2024 to pave the way to Ukraine’s eventual membership in NATO as the only viable and effective long-term security guarantee for Ukraine and for lasting and sustainable peace on the European continent,
Is deeply concerned about the Ukrainian authorities having denied 5th President of Ukraine, the Member of the Honorary Board of the IDU H.E. Mr Petro Poroshenko, and a delegation of European Solidarity MPs permission to visit Washington D.C. to take part in the IDU Forum. The voice of the leaders like President Poroshenko must be heard either in Washington or any other capital. Political unity, the respect for democratic values and principles are crucial to overcome the pressing existential challenges before Ukraine,
Encourages Ukraine to perform democratic reforms and underscores the critical importance of democracy, rule of law and human rights, recognizing the formidable challenges posed by the full-scale war. Securing democracy and pluralism, including the rights of opposition inside Ukraine is vital for its success.
