On 6 May 2018, the first parliamentary elections in nine years were held in Lebanon. The Lebanese Parliament has postponed general elections three times due to the war in neighbouring Syria and lack of consensus over the new electoral law. This election was long awaited by the Lebanese people to shape their country’s future.
IDU Chairman Stephen Harper congratulates IDU member party Lebanese Forces LF and its leader Samir Geagea on its success. LF nearly doubled their seats in parliament and most probably will gain cabinet posts in the next government. “The effective political work of the Lebanese Forces Party on all levels and a dedicated campaign are the foundation for its success. The results also shows that the people of Lebanon support the ideas of freedom and democracy and are willing to fight radical and extremist tendencies.”
IDU member candidate, the Lebanese Kataeb Party, in some districts won more votes than polls had predicted and thus will play a significant political role in Lebanon’s next parliament too.
Overall the situation in Lebanon and the region remains critical with the ongoing war in Syria and large number of refugees in the country. Therefore the democratic forces of Lebanon need the broad support of the international community, for peace and the fight against all radical forces.
