This year, the International Democrat Union celebrates its 35th anniversary. On 24th June 1983, at the peak of the Cold War, a group of distinguished political leaders met in London to create the IDU.
The following three and a half decades have witnessed the fall of the Iron Curtain, the fight against terrorism, and the development of globalization. Throughout these years the IDU has united conservatives globally to preserve and promote freedom and democracy in every part of the world.
Today, new challenges are being faced. Social media and new technology are disrupting all aspects of life, including politics. In emerging economies, models of authoritarianism and state capitalism are attempting to separate the improvement of living standards from the development of democratic rights. In developed countries, revived socialist and populist movements are on the rise. As the global alliance of the centre-right, the IDU is committed to bringing national conservatives, Christian democrats and classical liberals together to share experiences and best practices. The next IDU Executive Meeting is taking place from 16th to 18th September 2018 in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, California, USA.
