The International Democrat Union (IDU) is deeply concerned about the current situation in Venezuela. Throughout the last years Venezuela faced a profound and unprecedented political, economic, social and humanitarian crisis.
Regarding the report of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) more than 2.7 Million Venezuelans have left the country since 2015 and the numbers will raise up to 5 Million by the end of the year. Currently 87% of the Venezuelan people are living in poverty and 78% of the children are at risk of malnutrition. The illegal regime of Nicolas Maduro alone is responsible for the shortages of food, medicine and electricity as well as for the massive violations of human rights, corruption, drug trafficking, violence against its own people and political oppression. The regime alone is responsible for the blockade, rejection and destruction of urgently needed humanitarian aid stored in Colombia and Brazil. The ongoing repression by the Maduro regime resulted in people being killed, several hundred being injured and arrested throughout the last years.
Therefore, the IDU:
RECOGNISES Juan GUAIDÓ as the legitimate interim President of Venezuela.
CALLS on all IDU member parties to recognize Juan GUAIDÓ as the only legitimate interim president of Venezuela until new presidential elections can be called.
REITERATES the call for free and fair presidential elections to be organized in line with international standards.
DEMANDS to restore and protect the powers of the legitimate and constitutional elected National Assembly of Venezuela, to respect the rights and immunity of the Members of the National Assembly and to immediate release Roberto Marrero, Chief of Staff to interim President Juan GUAIDÓ, who has been illegally detained on March 21st, 2019.
SUPPORTS targeted sanctions against representatives of the Maduro regime responsible for human right violations and undermining democracy and the rule of law in Venezuela.
