At our recent Executive Meeting held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley California, the International Democrat Union adopted two resolutions condemning human rights violations and the on-going political crises in Venezuela and Nicaragua.
Together with the Unión de Partidos Latinoamericanos (UPLA), the IDU calls for an end to the violence being perpetrated against innocent civilians, the restoration of freedom and democracy, and respect for basic rights and human dignity.
In Venezuela the despotic socialist regime of Nicolás Maduro is responsible for ever-worsening conditions leading to massive emigration to neighbouring states. The IDU asks the international community to refocus awareness on the serious effects this migration is having on countries in the region, countries which do not have the economic resources to care for increasing waves of incoming migrants.
In Nicaragua the IDU supports the proposal for early elections during the first quarter of 2019 and asks for the deployment of international election observers to help ensure free and fair elections based on democratic standards and the rule of law.
