• The International Democracy Union (IDU) is closely following Mongolia’s democratic development and has done so since its transition to a democratic process.
• The IDU recognizes Mongolia’s challenging geopolitics and expresses its great pride and unwavering support to the people of Mongolia for their steady commitment to building a free, democratic, and open society.
• Sandwiched between Russia and China, the history of Mongols and free, independent policy remains a global inspiration.
However, the IDU regrets the disturbing trends of qualitative decline of Mongolia’s democratic institutions and the gradual deprivation of their hard-earned achievements. Just a decade ago, Mongolia was a world leader in economic growth according to the World Bank, had the sharpest decline in corruption as reported by Transparency International, and was a prominent leader in the Community of Democracies. Today, there is cause for grave concern.
The International Democracy Union:
DENOUNCES the last two election cycles, the highly patrimonial, corrupt, and manipulative policies of Mongolia’s former communist revolutionary party, the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP), led by its Chairman and populist Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai.
URGES the speedy and complete reform of political parties, ensuring individual political rights, and addressing the appallingly managed election processes in Mongolia.
CONDEMNS the Mongolian government’s brutal, systemic attacks to fracture unified, effective opposition, the silencing of critical voices of the public, the erosion of basic legal and Constitutional rights of its people, and the excessive enlargement and encouragement of state bureaucracy and its predatory appetite.
CALLS for greater international attention and collaboration with the people of Mongolia to not allow, by internal or external forces, the strangulation of their freedom and democratic aspirations, and to support and safeguard Mongolia as The Democratic Anchor in the East.
REITERATES its full support of the Mongolian Democratic Party as a responsible member of the global centre-right movement, and a historic trailblazer for Mongolia’s free independent development. The IDU counts on Mongolia’s democratic resilience and the courage of its freedom-loving people.
