The International Democrat Union (IDU) and the Union of Latin American Parties (UPLA) are deeply concerned by the leftward shift that different governments in Latin America have taken, the human rights violations committed in the region, and the persistence of dictatorships and populist governments in some countries. Therefore, IDU and UPLA:
CONDEMN all human rights violations committed by governments in Latin America, particularly in Cuba, El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. We express our commitment to all victims of these abuses, especially the 137 Cuban women unjustly imprisoned for peacefully protesting on July 11, 2021.
DRAW ATTENTION to the situation in El Salvador and Honduras, where their populist leaders seek to impose their ideology and proposals to concentrate power, affecting the rule of law.
EXPRESS our support for our political family in Ecuador and Peru in the face of the institutional and political crisis that these countries are experiencing, in particular, to highlight President Guillermo Lasso’s efforts to seek institutional solutions for the benefit of his country and all its citizens.
CONGRATULATE our political family on the electoral successes in Chile with the recent election of a qualified majority in the new Constitutional Council, and in Paraguay with the election of Santiago Peña as the new President of the country. Additionally, we expect with confidence that these positive results will extend to Argentina and Guatemala, where our member parties have a high probability of forming the next governments.
