The International Democrat Union and the Union of Latin American Parties (UPLA), in attention to the serious events of violence that have taken place in recent weeks in Colombian territory, express the following:
.- We express our concern at the orchestrated attack against the stability of the Colombian democratic system, where legitimate social protest has resulted in blockades, destruction and looting that seek to legitimize de facto ways and destabilize the economy and social order of that nation. With these actions, fundamental guarantees of citizens, public order and even access to basic services such as water and the hospital network are being violated, exacerbating the emergency caused by the Covid 19 pandemic.
.- We denounce a destabilizing strategy orchestrated by governments and parties promoting socialism in the 21st century, aimed at infiltrating the social protest by groups on the fringes of the law financed by money stemming from drug trafficking and other illicit activities and reinforced by a cyber war that is filling false news and scaremongering social and networks.
.- We reject the intention of non-governmental organizations and other political leaders to position a false image of what is happening in Colombia, which seeks to discredit the government of President Duque and the country’s armed forces, who have worked in defense of Colombians who have seen their rights violated by the excesses of vandalism and crime.
.- Finally, we call on all democratic political forces in Colombia to take all the necessary efforts to end the violence and destruction in the country and convict those who have committed excesses during these days. All democratic political forces are asked to facilitate a comprehensive and inclusive national policy on those aspects that will put an end to this social and political crisis and restore the rule of law in the country for the benefit of all its citizens.
