The International Democrat Union (IDU) and the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe (ACRE) strongly condemn the arrest of Montenegrin opposition leader Nebojša Medojević, chairman of IDU and ACRE member-party Movement for Change (Pokret za promjene PzP).
Medojević has been arrested in Podgorica despite the fact that his immunity as Member of the Parliament of Montenegro has not been lifted. IDU and ACRE call on all relevant institutions of Montenegro to ensure the rule of law and the rights of elected members of Parliament.
As a candidate for EU membership, Montenegro must respect the rule of law, the individual rights of its citizens and Members of Parliament, and must guarantee a fair and independent legal system.
The International Democrat Union is the world’s leading association of conservative, Christian-democratic, and centre-right political parties. With more than 80 member parties around the world, the IDU connects conservatives globally in support of freedom and democracy.
