The IDU is delighted to congratulate Sebastian Kurz and the Austrian People’s Party (Österreichische Volkspartei) on their big win in Sunday’s elections. Securing 38.4% of the Austrian vote – an increase of 6.9% on the 2017 elections – the ÖVP will no doubt lead the government in the new parliament. Kurz has been given a solid mandate from the Austrian people to continue to deliver strong conservative leadership. The Volkspartei now holds 73 seats in the Austrian Parliament, and although its future coalition partner is unknown, Sebastian Kurz has been given a very strong mandate for the talks to establish a government over the next few weeks.

These centre-right victories help to contribute to stable governance in the world, ensuring freedom and prosperity for citizens. Standing for democracy, free and fair elections, individual liberties and free-market economies, the centre-right provides the tools needed for nations to thrive.
