The deployment of Russian military forces on the border, the cyber-attacks on the Ukrainian government, and the political provocations by the Russian leadership have created an unacceptable level of threat to geopolitical stability. Russia’s demands contradict the NATO-Russia Founding Act of 1997 and key principles of international law such as the sovereignty of states and the freedom of alliance. The IDU calls on Russia to disengage its forces from the Ukrainian border and to pursue serious and peaceful dialogue.
At the same time, the democratic status of Ukraine is at risk internally. The current actions of the Zelensky government against the parliamentary opposition are unacceptable. In particular, the flimsy indictment by the Prosecutor General’s Office against former president Petro Poroshenko, the leader of the European Solidarity Party, are profoundly divisive. Such actions look like a selective and politically motivated prosecution against a key political opponent.
At this time of great peril, the President should be reaching out to the political opposition to strengthen national resolve against foreign aggression. Using the external threat to settle domestic political scores only plays into the hands of the aggressors. Therefore, the IDU calls on the Ukrainian government to unify all Ukrainian political forces against the Putin regime’s aggression and to drop the baseless charges against Mr. Poroshenko.
