The IDU thanks Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel for being a champion of freedom and democracy. During her chancellorship, the CDU Germany has been a true leader for centre-right parties in Europe and beyond. Her 16 years in office have left a proud legacy within the international Christian Democratic and conservative party landscape.
Angela Merkel’s time as Chancellor was marked by important firsts from the very beginning. She was the first female chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and the first chancellor to originate from the former East Germany. We have always believed that her experience of the totalitarian regime of the German Democratic Republic shaped her understanding of the fight against authoritarianism and oppression and her commitment to work for freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
