The International Democracy Union (IDU), together with the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSS), organized a Reagan-Thatcher Dinner on the margins of the 2024 Munich Security Conference.
After IDU Chairman and 22nd Prime Minister of Canada, the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper welcomed heads of state and government, as well as other distinguished guests from IDU member parties from around the world, Markus Ferber, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Hanns Seidel Foundation, gave an introduction on the geostrategic challenges of today. This was followed by an enriching discussion between the Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković and United States Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska, moderated by IRI President Dr. Dan Twining.
During the evening, important topics such as the threats to global supply chains stemming from wars and their impact on world trade were discussed. Speakers emphasized the urgent need to respond to these challenges and develop strategies for a secure and stable global economy. They highlighted the shifts in global trade flows caused by geopolitical conflicts and the decline of multilateralism. It was emphasized that these developments pose a serious threat to economic stability and prosperity and that coordinated action at the international level is needed to address these challenges.
Furthermore, a clear commitment to supporting Ukraine was discussed, as well as the importance of supporting Israel in the Middle Eastern conflict. The importance of Western deterrence, especially concerning the threat posed by Iran, was noted.
