IDU Resolution on Tanzania
Endorsed by CHADEMA Tanzania, IDU Executive Committee Meeting, Zagreb, May 1st, 2026
Considering the fact that the Chairman of CHADEMA and the IDU Executive Vice Chairman Hon Tundu Lissu has been held in continued detention for over a year and is now facing a fabricated treason charge following his arbitrary arrest on April 9, 2025,
Cognizant of the harsh and inhumane conditions to which Hon Lissu is being subjected while in solitary confinement at the Dar es Salaam’s Ukonga maximum security prison, resulting in the deterioration of his health,
Convinced that the Tanzania judiciary is being weaponized against the opposition and therefore paralyzed in discharging its fundamental obligations on Hon Lissu’s fabricated treason trial that should have not been admitted in the court in the first place as it lacks credible legal foundations,
Aware of Tanzanian state-coordinated plots to exterminate CHADEMA, as exemplified by various manipulated court proceedings in order to incapacitate it politically,
Knowing of the effort by the illegitimate regime in Dar es Salaam to cover up the mass killings it perpetrated during the October 2025 Tanzania sham elections,
Taking into account that hundreds of CHADEMA leaders, members, and supporters are in prison detention facing various politically motivated charges,
The International Democracy Union therefore resolves:
- To continue to emphasise that the ongoing detention and treason trial is politically motivated and lacking a legal foundation, and thus demands Hon Lissu’s immediate and unconditional release,
- To call for authorities in Tanzania to respect and uphold Hon Lissu’s rights, including ensuring access to adequate medical care and legal counsel,
- To emphasize that all political prisoners should be unconditionally and immediately released.
- To remind Tanzanian authorities to respect political pluralism which offers Tanzanians an opportunity to exercise their democratic rights.
- To remind the international community that the October 2025 Tanzania killings require an independent investigation by international bodies led by the United Nations (UN) and the International Criminal Court (ICC),
- To call upon the international community to consider sanctions on the illegitimate Tanzanian regime, including a travel ban on anyone associated with it.
