IDU Statement on the Situation in Lebanon
The International Democracy Union (IDU) expresses its deep concern regarding the escalating security crisis in Lebanon and its implications for the sovereignty and stability of the Lebanese state.
As highlighted by the Kataeb Party, Lebanon has long faced serious challenges to state authority due to the presence of armed non-state actors operating outside the control of the Lebanese government. This has undermined Lebanon’s national sovereignty and exposed its people to repeated cycles of instability and conflict.
The IDU welcomes the Lebanese Government’s decision to reaffirm that the state alone holds the legitimate authority over security, military activity, and national defence. The strengthening of state sovereignty and the rule of law is an essential step toward ensuring long-term peace, stability, and democratic governance in Lebanon.
The International Democracy Union calls on the international community to:
- Support the Lebanese state’s sovereignty and authority, including efforts by the government and national institutions to ensure that all armed activity operates strictly under state control.
- Strengthen the capacity of legitimate Lebanese security institutions, including the Lebanese Armed Forces and Internal Security Forces, so they can effectively uphold national security and the rule of law.
- Encourage diplomatic engagement aimed at reducing regional tensions, including dialogue that can help end hostilities and promote lasting stability along Lebanon’s borders.
- Provide humanitarian and reconstruction support to assist displaced families and communities affected by the ongoing conflict.
- Address destabilizing external interference in Lebanon’s internal affairs, including actions that support armed non-state actors and undermine the sovereignty of the Lebanese state.
As a long-standing member of the IDU family, the Kataeb Party plays an important role in advocating for a sovereign, democratic, and stable Lebanon. The IDU stands in solidarity with the Lebanese people and supports all efforts that reinforce democratic institutions, the rule of law, and peaceful political processes.
