The International Women’s Democracy Union (IWDU) condemns in the strongest possible
terms the death sentence handed down to Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old accounting student, for
“blasphemy” over a social media post.
A young woman faces execution for words she wrote online. This is not justice. It is the act of
a regime that fears its own people, and above all its women.
Her sentence is part of a brutal and systematic escalation of repression by the Iranian regime
since the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement and the January protests. According to Iran
Human Rights, more than 500 people have been executed in Iran this year, among them at least
16 women. At least eight more women currently face execution on political and security
charges.
No one should ever be sentenced to death for expressing their views. The death penalty is an
inhumane punishment and a grave violation of fundamental human rights. Using it to silence
dissent is state terror.
The IWDU stands in full solidarity with Najmeh Amini and with all Iranian women who refuse
to be silenced. We demand that the Iranian authorities immediately overturn her death sentence
and release her. We call on the international community, and on governments of every political
stripe, to raise their voices without delay, to hold the regime accountable, and to make clear
that the world is watching.
Woman. Life. Freedom.
