The International Democracy Union stresses that the Euro-Atlantic security environment is at its most perilous since the end of the Cold War. Russia’s escalating threats towards NATO member states, especially along the Eastern flank, demand utmost seriousness. Senior Russian officials and state media openly speculate about possible aggression against Baltic states and Poland, heightening regional anxiety. This is not idle rhetoric but a clear strategic pattern of intimidation that must be met with unity and clarity.
Numerous NATO governments and independent intelligence assessments -including from Germany, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Baltic partners – conclude that Russia could attempt an aggressive act against NATO before 2030, potentially within two to four years. The Baltic states are considered likely targets due to their geographic proximity and symbolic importance. Such threats require explicit political red lines to prevent miscalculation and unleash credible deterrence.
In this spirit, the IDU calls on NATO to consider a policy of deterrence that any further Russian attack on a NATO member state should trigger a process for Ukraine’s immediate accession. Integrating Ukraine into the Alliance would reinforce collective security and deny Moscow potential strategic gains. Attempts to exclude the EU or Ukraine from “peace talks” are unacceptable; sovereign nations must determine their own futures without external sidelining.
The IDU also expresses concern over recent transatlantic tensions over sanctions, tariffs, and trade policies, which have weakened collective leverage and trust. A formal US-EU coordination mechanism dedicated to security, trade, and technology is urgently needed to improve early consultation, synchronize policies, and prevent damaging surprises.
Finally, accelerating the confiscation and deployment of Russia’s approximately €260 billion in frozen state assets – largely held within the EU – is a moral and strategic imperative to finance Ukraine’s defence and reconstruction. Unity, clarity, and steadfast resolve remain the most effective deterrents against future conflict.
