Resolution on Tanzania
Endorsed by the CHADEMA Party of Tanzania December 5th, Washington DC
HAVING monitored the Tanzanian political situation which has featured state-sponsored abductions, enforced disappearances, extra-judicial killings, arbitrary arrests and incommunicado detentions, and torture of CHADEMA members and leaders, activists, journalists and government critics,
AWARE that the government of Tanzania refused to institute real electoral reforms to provide for and guarantee free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections,
AWARE that the leader of CHADEMA Party – the largest opposition- was and still is in prison detention facing a treason charge, the entire CHADEMA Party was blocked from participating in the elections and its political activities suspended,
COGNIZANT of the many lives lost and thousands of Tanzanians left with life-threatening injuries due to the unreasonable and excessive force by the Tanzanian Police when cracking down on peaceful protests against the fraudulent staged elections,
The International Democracy Union (IDU) therefore;
- Expresses its deepest concern and strongly condemns the killings of civilians during the peaceful protest in Tanzania.
- Recognizes that the October elections in Tanzania were completely fraudulent and whoever was declared a winner is illegitimate.
- Calls up the democratic nations of the world to not recognize the President of Tanzania or offer any cooperation to their government as, they are a product of illegitimate and violent elections.
- Calls upon the United Nations (UN) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to swiftly investigate the killings in Tanzania and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
- Calls up on the International Community to impose or freeze any aid to the illegitimate government of Tanzania pending serious reforms that will restore and guarantee democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights as demanded by Tanzanians.
- Continues to emphasise that the ongoing treason case against Tundu Lissu is politically motivated and therefore should be immediately dropped and he be set free unconditionally.
- Demands for an immediate and unconditional release of thousands of political detainees arbitrarily arrested before and after the October sham elections.
