The International Democrat Union is closely following the latest developments in Lebanon with concern. Today marks another day of peaceful protest in Beirut and many other cities, bringing together Lebanese citizens regardless of their religious beliefs or political affiliation. In particular we note the presence of many young Lebanese calling for real political reforms in order to secure a more prosperous future.
IDU Chairman Stephen Harper stated: “In recent decades the political and economic situation in Lebanon has deteriorated. Even after the first democratic election in years, the implementation of reforms badly needed to avert an economic crisis has not occurred. As an organization committed to promoting freedom, democracy and the rule of law, the IDU calls for the ongoing respect for the rights of peaceful demonstrators and stands with the people of Lebanon in calling for urgent action to secure a better future.”
The IDU is the world’s leading association of conservative, Christian-democratic, and centre-right political parties. With more than 80 member parties around the world, the IDU connects conservatives globally in support of freedom and democracy. www.idu.org
