The International Democrat Union is very concerned about the political developments in El Salvador. The IDU supports the resolution of our regional affiliate, the Unión de Partidos Latinoamericanos – UPLA, to stand up for the rule of law and the division of power in El Salvador.

STATEMENT OF THE UNION OF LATIN AMERICAN PARTIES (UPLA) ON THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN EL SALVADOR.
The board of the Union of Latin American Parties (UPLA), considering the events that are happening in El Salvador that account for a political crisis in the country, states the following:
1.- Express concern about the events that are happening in El Salvador and in particular regarding the military occupation of the Legislative Assembly, actions that compromise the political stability of the country and that may constitute an attack on the principle of separation of powers.
2.- Urge the governments of the region, the multilateral organizations, and especially the OAS, that, to the extent of their possibilities and within their powers, provide a permanent observation on the functioning of the division of powers and Respect for constitutional guarantees in the country.
3.- Reiterate the commitment of the Union of Latin American Parties with the rule of law and the division of powers, as well as with compliance with the constitutional processes and deadlines for the treatment and consideration of legislative initiatives.
