The International Democrat Union has condemned the attack on Mohamed Anni Nasheed, Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives. President Nasheed was injured in an explosion during a targeted terrorist attack on the evening of May 5, 2021.
IDU Chairman, the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper said, “This assault is an attack on the country’s democracy. President Nasheed was the first democratically elected president of the Maldives, and he is a tireless fighter for freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.”
The IDU also expressed its best wishes for Anni and the medical team looking after him, and we very much hope that he will make a speedy recovery from his injuries.
The IDU has confirmed its strong support for President Nasheed, the democratic Government of the Maldives and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Chairman Harper reiterated, “The IDU global family stands firm to defending democracy, freedom and human rights in the Maldives and around the world. Terrorism and violence will not silence us.”
With more than 80 member-parties, the IDU is the world’s leading association of conservative, Christian-democratic, and centre-right political parties. In 2019, the MDP was the first recipient of IDU’s Bush-Thatcher Award for Freedom and Democracy.
