The International Democracy Union (IDU) expresses its grave concern on the occasion of the first anniversary of the arbitrary arrest on April 9th, 2025 and the continued detention of Tanzanian opposition leader and IDU Bush–Thatcher Award for Freedom recipient Tundu Lissu.
Mr. Lissu’s arrest following a peaceful political rally, and the subsequent charges brought against him, lack a credible legal foundation and reflect a troubling pattern of political persecution aimed at silencing democratic opposition. His continued detention, including restrictions on due process and access to legal counsel, stands in clear violation of fundamental democratic norms and human rights obligations.
The IDU is further alarmed by broader actions that undermine political pluralism in Tanzania, including efforts to exclude opposition parties from meaningful electoral participation ahead of the 2025 elections. Such measures erode public trust and compromise the integrity of democratic processes.
The International Democracy Union calls on the Government of Tanzania to:
The IDU stands in solidarity with its Executive Vice Chairman Tundu Lissu, with Tanzania’s democratic opposition, and with all citizens striving peacefully for liberty, justice, and democratic governance.
